ANGEL OF JEHOVAH In the Scriptures, Angel of Jehovah is the most mentioned and the most eminent Angel in the Bible. Yet, He is in no way another title for Jehovah God, as professed Christians are misrepresenting Him. Angel of YHWH is at the service of YHWH, but Angel of YHWH cannot be Jehovah, just like the daughter of X cannot be X. Unfortunately, when it comes to Judaism many do come up with crazy theology about the religion, which, nevertheless, grosses a sizable following. There is an explanation for that in 1 Timothy 4:1-5 and 2 Timothy 4:3). I chose specific verses to show that Angel of Jehovah is at the service of Jehovah God and not another name for Jehovah. Jumping to the Exodus time, we read that Moses asked YHWH God to accompany him and the Israelites to the promised land (Exodus 33:12-15). (12) And Moses said to Jehovah, Behold, You are saying to me, Cause this people to go up. And You, You have not told me whom You will send with me. And yet You have said, I know you by name, and also you have found favor in My eyes. (13) And now, if I have found favor in Your eyes, please make me see Your ways, and let me know You, so that I may find favor in Your eyes; and consider that this nation is Your people. (14) And He said, My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. (15) And they said to Him, If Your presence does not go, do not cause us to go up from here. Exodus 33:12-15 LITV YHWH God in Exodus 23:20-23 gave Moses the assurance that He will charge His own personal and unforgiving Angel (verse 21) to take them to Canaan. Obeying the voice of His Angel is the same as obeying YHWH God, God told Moses (verse 22). So, we find Angel of YHWH speaking as if He is the very YHWH Himself. Angel of YHWH carries so much authority because YHWH told Moses that ‘My name is on Him’ (verse 21). Therefore, when Angel of YHWH speaks, He is speaking on behalf of YHWH. He is like God. (20) Behold, I send [an] Angel before you, to keep you in the way, and to bring you to the place which I have prepared. (21) Be on guard before Him and obey His voice. Do not provoke Him, for He will not pardon your transgressions. For My name is in Him. (22) But if you shall indeed obey His voice, and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies, and a foe to your foes. (23) For My Angel shall go before you and bring you in to the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And I will cut them off. Exodus 23:20-23 MKJV (34) And now go, lead the people to that place which I have spoken to you. Behold, My Angel shall go before your face. And in the day of My visitation, I will visit their sin on them. Exodus 32:34 LITV YHWH’s Angel is not a newcomer in the Ministry of Heaven towards earth. Before Moses, we can find Him consoling Hagar who fled from the presence of her benefactors because Hagar got conceited with her pregnancy and promising Hagar in the first person that everything was going to be fine. And the angel of Yahweh said to her, "I will greatly multiply your offspring, so that they cannot be counted for their abundance." (11) And the angel of Yahweh said to her: "Behold, you are pregnant and shall have a son. And you shall call his name Ishmael, for Yahweh has listened to your suffering. Genesis 16:10-11 LEB Note how Angel of YHWH speaks in the first person to Hagar as He promised to her in the first person that "I will greatly multiply your offspring, so that they cannot be counted for their abundance." However, when He announced the fate of her unborn child, Angel of YHWH switches the tone to give credit to His Boss as He said ’And you shall call his name Ishmael, for Yahweh has listened to your suffering ‘. Angel of YHWH did not say ‘for I have listened to your sufferings.’ He answers to YHWH God (Jesus), as YHWH God came to be known when He became flesh (Matthew 1:21, 25, Luke 1:35, 2:11, John 8:24, 5:39). Remember the story of the Angel with similar authority who spoke to the unbelieving Zechariah, in Luke 1:19-20, whom the Angel punishes with muteness? (19) And the angel answered and said to him, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to announce to you this good news. (20) And behold, you will be silent and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time." Luke 1:19-20 LEB. Gabriel speaks to Zechariah with the same authority as Angel of YHWH and not any other Angel is allowed such authority. Is Gabriel the same as Angel of YHWH? Before Moses, we find Angel of Jehovah ministering to Abraham. in Genesis 22, we read that God asked Abraham to go sacrifice his heir, the only promised son, to evaluate his faith or belief (verse1). When Abraham lifted his hand to comply with God’s request, it was His Angel, Angel of YHWH, who, in the first person, called on Abraham to stop. (10) And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. (11) And the angel of Yahweh called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham! Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am." (12) And he said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the boy; do not do anything to him. For now, I know that you are one who fears God, since you have not withheld your son, your only child, from me. Genesis 22:10-12 LEB From me? However, as the story evolved, He signified that He acts on behalf of YHWH (verse 16). (15) And the angel of Yahweh called to Abraham a second time from heaven. (16) And he said, "I swear by myself, declares Yahweh, that because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only child (Genesis 22:15-16 LEB). In that narrative, Angel of YHWH again gives credit to His Boss, in verse 16, by adding ‘declares YHWH’. It is Angel of YHWH who promulgated for YHWH the blessing to all nations as a function of Abraham’s unsurpassed faith (verse 18). As Isaac thought of going to Egypt, YHWH appeared to Isaac who must have heard Angel of YHWH ordering his Father not to kill him, to remind him His promise to his father Abraham (Genesis 26:1-5). Even though it was His Angel who made the promise to Abraham, in the dream YHWH claims ownership of the promise. So, Angel of YHWH speaks as if He is YHWH God, but He speaks on behalf of YHWH God. Also, in Zechariah 1:12-14, we see the clear separation between YHWH and His Angel as His Angel pleads with Him on behalf of Jerusalem. (12) Then the Angel of Jehovah answered and said, O Jehovah of Hosts, how long will You not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah against which You have cursed these seventy years? (13) And Jehovah answered the angel who talked with me with good words, comfortable words. (14) So, the angel who talked with me said to me, Cry out, saying, So says Jehovah of Hosts: I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy. Zechariah 1:12-14 MKJV The eminence of Angel of Jehovah comes from the fact that He is the faithful Ambassador of Jehovah God, embodying the holiness and the might of Jehovah God. That is the point of view that is written in Exodus 23:20-21. Consider the warnings Jehovah gave to Moses concerning obeying the voice of His Angel in Exodus 23:21. Judges 13:16 ASV (16) And the angel of Jehovah said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread; and if thou wilt make ready a burnt- offering, thou must offer it unto Jehovah. For Manoah knew not that he was the angel of Jehovah. In the New Testament, we find the same Angel of YHWH continuing His ministering to mankind on behalf of YHWH God. He is known as Angel of the Lord not Angel of YHWH, because Greek, in the New Testament, not Hebrew, is the language used and, therefore, the New Testament refers to YHWH as ‘The LORD’ or 'Lord', LORD stands for 'Jehovah' in the Greek language whenever it refers to a heavenly being. Period. In short, Angel of Jehovah (the Lord) cannot be Jesus as we read about His ministering works. His involvement as the following verses testify proves that angel of YHWH (The LORD) could not be Jesus nor His double. Angel of YHWH was the Bodyguard of Jesus as He was growing up. (Matthew 1:20 KJ3) And as he was thinking about these things, behold, [an] angel of the Lord was seen by him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For that in her is generated of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 1:24 KJ3) And being aroused from sleep, Joseph did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took as his wife, (Matthew 2:13 KJ3) And they having departed, behold, [an] angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph by a dream, saying, Rise up! Take the child and His mother with you and flee into Egypt. And be there until I shall tell you. For Herod is about to look for the child in order to destroy Him. (Matthew 2:19 KJ3) But Herod having died, behold, [an] angel of the Lord appears to Joseph by a dream in Egypt, (Matthew 28:2 KJ3) And, behold! A great earthquake occurred! For descending from Heaven and coming near, [an] angel of the Lord rolled away the stone from the door and was sitting on it. (Luke 1:11 KJ3) And [an] angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right of the altar of incense. (Luke 2:9 KJ3) And, behold, [an] angel of the Lord came on them. And the glory of the Lord shone around them. And they feared a great fear. (Acts 5:19 KJ3) But [an] angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison during the night, and leading them out, he said, (Acts 7:30 KJ3) And forty years being fulfilled to him, the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire of a bush in the desert of Mount Sinai. (Acts 8:26 KJ3) But [an] angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, Rise up and go along south on the way going down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is a deserted place. (Acts 12:7 KJ3) And, behold! [An] angel of the Lord stood by, and a light shone in the building. And striking Peter’s side, he aroused him, saying, Rise up in haste! And the chains fell off from his hands. (Acts 12:23 KJ3) And instantly [an] angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give the glory to God. And having been eaten of worms, he breathed out his soul. In the book of Revelation, there is an emulation of the relationship between YHWH God and His Angel. It must be the same Jehovah God who sent the same Angel of Jehovah to Apostle John to reveal what is to come to the world (Revelation 1). Revelation 22:16 LITV (16) I, Jesus, sent My angel to testify these things to you over the assemblies. I am the Root and Offspring of David, the bright and morning Star. Judges 13:16 ASV (16)  And the angel of Jehovah said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread; and if thou wilt make ready a burnt-offering, thou must offer it unto Jehovah. Luke 1:19 ASV (19)  And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to bring thee these good tidings. August 27, 2022.
