Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his
disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” Matthew 16:13 ESV
As you might think, Jesus wanted to know whom people take Him for beyond what they saw. He thought of picking
the brain of His closest, His beloved Disciples. Knowing who Jesus is besides the basics is a matter of everlasting or
eternal life or death (Romans 10:9-10).
The true identity of Jesus has been debated since He was revealed publicly to begin His redemptive mission. As you have read in Matthew 16:13-17, Peter had settled the mystery surrounding Jesus when he correctly answered the question on the origins of Jesus. You would think that Peter got the answer because he was versed in the Torah and the Prophets and the Psalms. He did not get the correct answer on his own. In Matthew 16:17, Jesus clarified that knowing who He was or is before He became flesh does not come from a knowledge of the Jewish canon or a doctorate in Theology. Rather, grasping Jesus and the new God the Father doctrine in JOHN 17:6, which only Jesus had established in Judaism, is a function of divine revelation. Jesus reiterated in Luke 10:22 the same revelation concept that, for anyone to get to know who Jesus and God The Father is, we must be individually chosen by Jesus for that privileged revelation. Luke 10:22 implies that if Jesus does not reveal Himself to you personally, your Jesus can be anyone except Jesus, the Being who was born as YHWH in Luke 2:11. For example, Jesus had been downgraded to an Angel or a special Angel or Archangel Michael by many believers. Notwithstanding that modern view of Jesus to have been an Angel, Jesus confirmed in John13:13 that He is the YHWH or ADONAI.
